The desk
A journal, not a feed.
democratpeak is an independent UK journal covering NFTs, on-chain art, and the galleries, studios and collections that still take digital work seriously. We publish from Milnthorpe, Cumbria — plus-code 67QF+XC, postcode LA7 7NJ — because we wanted a desk that was not already inside the conversation it was supposed to describe.
The name is a stubbornness. Peak as in the fells, and peak as in the moment everyone told us had already passed. Democrat as in: the work should be lookable-at without a password, even when the object is scarce. We are not a marketplace. We do not take a cut of sales. We do not publish floor prices. We do not offer investment advice.
Who writes
The desk is small. Sian Calder writes London rooms. Rohan Vekaria writes studios and the north. Nessa Quill writes collecting, law-adjacent practicalities, and the sentences that have to be boring to be useful. Editorials go out unsigned when they are the house. We hire no one to pretend to be a community manager.
We visit in person when we can. We will not review a drop we have only seen as a grid. If we get a fact wrong, we correct it on the page and note the date. Pitch us with work, not with a growth story.
Independence
Advertising, when we take it, will be labelled. Artists we visit do not pay for the visit. Galleries do not buy the map. If a conflict appears — a friend, a former colleague, a work one of us owns — we say so in the piece or we do not run the piece. That is not a purity ritual. It is how a small paper stays readable.
